NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission registration

NDIS participants will be required to register with the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission as of December 1, 2020.

This means that licenced providers who support NDIS participants will be regulated by the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission and the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission.

Approved providers have the same responsibilities to NDIS participants as they do to other consumers who receive aged care services and supports, and they are still governed by the Aged Care Act 1997.

Aged Care Registration Process

In all situations, you are responsible for your client’s safety and must be confident that all staff are trustworthy, capable of working correctly and will not damage them.

You must apply to the Aged Care Quality & Safety Commission to become an authorised provider to function as efficiently as feasible.

Types of aged care will you provide

You must first decide what type of care you will provide before becoming a provider, which can include:

Operating a residential care home for the elderly
Providing care in people’s homes
Respite care and other services

Rule and regulations

From December 1, 2020, if your aged care home provides care to disability services members, you must meet disability services requirements.
Comply with the disability services Code of Conduct in supporting NDIS participants
The disability services had you automatically registered.
You must renew your registration when it expires. A third-party audit is required for this.
You must guarantee that each employee has passed an approved aged care provider background check.
The disability services Behaviour Support standards must be met and the transitional schedule.

Education and other requirements

A VET qualification in ageing assistance or individual support is commonly required to work as an aged care worker.

Ensure you have all of the required immunisations and certifications, such as a First Aid Certificate and a Police Check.

A National Police Certificate and a Provide First Aid Certificate are required to operate as an aged care worker.

Those who provide community and home support care must have a valid driver’s licence.

Personal hygiene
Emotional support

Respite care service

Respite care is the provision of short–term or temporary care to the elderly or unwell for a few hours or weeks to provide relief or respite to the primary caregiver. Respite care service includes:

Eat or drink
Take medications
Exercise
Enjoy the outdoors
Get in and out of bed
